Without education, who knows what the world would be like today. As we all know, education plays a major role in the function of society. That is why I am going to explain how education affects society through the functionalism perspective. This perspective, founded by Emile Dukheim, is looked at through the macro level of society. Functionalism is concerned with how society functions as a whole. It sees society as an organism with interconnected parts working together to keep the world in balance. This theory of interconnected parts is known as the organic model. Now that you know what functionalism is, let's discuss how education is intertwined with this theory today. I will do this by explaining educations direct function in society, and by seeing what life would be like without education.
First of all, let's see exactly what education does for the function of society. In my opinion, education is the balancer if society. As a child, parents will enforce rules and morals very early in the child's life. This is the earliest form of education. Children are taught very early to share and not always to think of themselves. By making a child aware of this, they will develop a conscience. This is the very foundation of becoming a person who is able to interact in society and function with other people. At five years of age, children then start their formal education. Just merely going to school and interacting with other children is an example of education intertwining with functionalism. This will enforce the idea that at school you must be on your best behavior or there will be consequences. It teaches children that life is not all fun and games and you must learn in order to interact appropriately in society. This is directly related to Erving Goffman's idea of Dramaturgy/Impression management. At ages 1-4 a child acts any way they want to and develops their own personality. They are backstage for these years getting ready to face the world and perform. Once they go to school, they are free from their parents and now must perform on their own. This teaches them that you may be able to do what ever you want backstage, but once you hit center stage (school), you must now control your emotions and become accountable for your own actions. This is the very basis of which education plays an enormous role in the function of society. Education leads to the stagnation of anarchy and rebellion and the growth of interaction and maturity. As you get older, education still plays a major role on your function in society. As you go to school, you find out what your strengths and weaknesses are. This helps you to realize what you are best at and what kind of person you are. It is also where you may find your role or purpose in the world. Once you find out your role in society, it is easier to function and become a better person. For example, you might be the most terrible English student on the face of the planet, but you can fix cars with ease. This in turn, would make you realize that you might want to be an auto mechanic. Not everyone needs to become a renaissance man these days, and education aids you in realizing your niche in society. Along with this niche, there may be labeling involved also. Through Howard Becker and Ed Lement's labeling theory, functionalist would be able to directly link education with this theory. If you look at any school today, there are different groups and clicks scattered about. If you are good at sports, you are considered a jock so you hang out with other jocks. I feel that people like familiarity and that's why these groups are formed. It is easier to get along with someone who shares the same goals and interests and without education we might not know what those goals and interests are. These groups may also interact with each other, and that is what balances society and it's interconnected parts. If everyone was the same, what fun would that be? Now that I have told what role education plays in the function of society, let's discuss what life would be like without it.

Furthermore, life without education would not be good. I have told you earlier that education stagnates anarchy and rebellion and now I will tell you why. Education is the very basis for morals and responsibility, and the reason society functions is because of these morals and responsibilities. I feel that people would be more likely to rebel if they are not taught at a very young age the importance of education. Education teaches people to conform to the ways of society and also teaches you that in order to succeed, you must be responsible and make efforts toward reaching you goals. This is the very gel that holds society together through the functionalist perspective. Without this gel, the world would be in trouble. That is why we have formed education and why it will never die out.

In conclusion, I have now enlightened you on the role education plays in the function of society. It is the very motivator and glue that society needs to function as a whole. If we did not have this balance in our lives, it would be devastating. In dealing with education as a functionalist, I hope you too can see the importance of education in molding the interactive society we are a part of today.
